What is an apprenticeship ?
It is a training program that gives you the opportunity to combine hands-on work in a specific profession or trade with classroom learning.
What is there to gain from undertaking an apprenticeship ?
- Work alongside experienced staff to build skills and knowledge in a trade/profession you’re interested in.
- Gain real life experience of the workplace.
- Obtain recognised qualifications – job specific and functional skills (maths and english).
- Gain valuable transferable employability skills such team working, communication, problem-solving and organisational.
- Get time to study for your qualifications (usually one day a week).
- Earn while you learn – you will earn a wage and get holiday pay too.
How long does an apprenticeship last ?
They can take from 1 to 5 years to complete. It depends upon the level of the apprenticeship which range from intermediate to degree level.
Am I eligible ?
Yes, provided you are:
- 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays.
- Living in England.
- Not in full-time education.
What if I’m not ready for an apprenticeship ?
A traineeship may well be the option for you. It is an education and training programme which includes work experience and can help get you ready for an apprenticeship or work. It can last for up to 6 months and is unpaid. You could also get the chance to improve your english and maths.
Am I eligible ?
Yes, provided you are:
- eligible to work in England.
- unemployed and have little or no work experience.
- aged 16-24 years old with an education, health and care (EHC) plan.
- qualified below level 3.
